So you know when you are talking to someone and they get the idea that you are into cars, they pop the question so "what's your dream car? " to keep the conversation going. If they are into cars it's a question they really are interested in hearing. If they are not (the usual) they could care less about the answer; it's just something to keep away awkward silence. These are the same type of people who think your answer to that question would either be a Ferrari or a Lamborghini and if you were to try and explain to them that it is actually a Buick Grand National or a Datsun 240z they would look at you as if you just ate fecal matter. For me, I hold strong to naming the E46 M3 in Laguna Seca Blue as my dream car.

Kinja'd!!!

It's a car that handles great, has timeless beauty, sounds great and is pretty quick. By this time, the non car enthusiast conversation partner has probably wished he/she never started the conversation but hey, I'm speaking my mind. So this makes me wonder, fellow Oppositelockers, what are your dream cars and why?

1969 Ford Fairlane 500 Fastback completely restored with big modern brakes and suspension. The cherry on top being a 7.3L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel V8.

Why? Because there is nothing out there that tickles my fancy. Plus, all the fun in making this baby to pass to my little hoonigans in the future.

I've wanted a 911 for as long as I can remember. I was so thrilled when I got to drive one, and it was just what I wanted it to be. Perfect steering, great visibility, plenty of power, and that glorious flat six wail. After that I wanted one even more.

Then Porsche dropped a bomb with the 991 Targa 4S. Yeah, that's the one I'll have. With a 7MT.

You're both correct.

If we're talking about dream car I'd be afraid to drive, then it's the Toyota 2000 GT:

Kinja'd!!!

Just look at those sad eyes! It's saying, "Why won't you drive me? Did I do something wrong? Is it because I'm too beautiful?"

But for something I'd actually take onto the road, there is something about the Z34 Nismo that has really been appealing to me lately (SSRs are always a plus):

Realistically, an e30 M3, Alfa Giulia Super, or my car, if it was actually in decent shape. Why? They've got the perfect mix of everyday usability, good looks (Okay, maybe not so much my car), great engines, and great-er handling.

Unrealistically, a black Fox body Mustang with huge box flares, velocity stacks, a Sierra Cossie spoiler, Buick GNX wheels, Jon Kasse Boss 598C.I. engine, two turbos, and side pipes coming out behind the front wheels. Why? Because I'm a bit strange.

I want to build my own Lotus 7 (with help from my engineer mate if I have to). I feel that is an attainable goal. Nothing too crazy in power. 4AGE blacktop preferred.

I can buy them if I'm lazy, but the dream part is having built it myself.

Simple fact of life, You grow up thinking you will date a super model some day, but end up with the girl next door(who is crazy in bed hopefully)... Applies to cars in a similar way I guess..

That said my dream car is the Z4MR, which I drive right now, and probably a car I wont sell for a very long time...

There is a dark side to this game. My dream car is also an E46 M3. Then I got a good one, and it's even better than I expected, and I drive it every day, and I love it, and the miles are so low that with just (admittedly not cheap) maintenance I could keep driving it for a long, long time. So naturally, now I have my dream car and I want to sell it and buy an E34 M5—which is demonstrably worse in nearly every way, but I want to experience owning one. Or worse yet, an 850, but I loved them when I was a kid. Or maybe an E39 M5 so I could have a more usable back seat. Or maybe my dream car is now a 911? I don't know, but sometimes being a car enthusiast is exhausting.

I can't possibly distill my answer down to one or two models. I'll take an abandoned airport with at least 1 hangar. Every hangar is filled with whatever catches my fancy. For example, Series 1 Jaguar XJ12 with an AMG twin turbo V12. E63 4matic wagon. E34/39 M5. FD RX7 Bathurst. McLaren F1. About a dozen Alfas. A few classic Ferraris. Carrera GT. 918 Spyder. 550 Spyder. XKE. '03 XJR. '55 Chevy 210 Handyman, not a nomad, with an LS7. 300SL. 1 corvette from every generation. The hammer.

This could go on all night,so I'll stop here.

My dream car? It would have to be a Salomon/Pink colored 1957 Chevy BelAir Convertible restomod. Under the hood, it'd have the best Chevrolet engine of them all, a 409. now make that engine all aluminum. That lump would be built up, and would be making about 550rwhp. the car will be heard through a set of pipes that would allow it to sing it's V8 melody as it rumbled down the road. I would do the shifting with a nice slick 6-speed box, while sitting in a while leather bucket seat that is just the perfect fit. The big boat steering wheel would be replaced with a small, sporty wheel. The whole car would be set up to behave like a real GT. Stiffer suspension, Bigger brakes, firmer chassis. All the panels that can would be replaced with lightweight versions to save on weight.

It would be a fine touring automobile for me to have to use every day

For me, there are different levels of dream cars, based on attainability. We were lucky enough to have an opportunity to buy our dream car about 2 months ago, and we jumped on it: 2002 E46 M3 LSB 6spd. However, my dream car (~5-10 years from now realistic) is a SRT Viper T/A. My not so realistic (ever) dream car is a Saleen S7 TT. Of course there are many other levels in between those, but those are the main ones.

Also, our M3 is definitely a work in progress. It still needs a few things to be what we ultimately want it to be. This is what we (I) want:

(Social media is a sin to my significant other, but she is not Chinese if you believe that) It still is understated, if you're not a car enthusiast and don't know what you're looking at. Also, the bro's who buy M3's typically don't register the saloon version as an M3, because the car is just a status symbol to them. I do wish you had sexy brake calipers though.
